Computer shuts off during or right after boot

Specs: Windows xp sp3, 2.8 Celeron / 512M
Compaq Presario SR1020NX with Win XP SP3. Computer shuts off during boot process after the Win logo appears. It some times will last all the way through the windows boot process and even allow a virus checker to start. It does in as well in any safe mode (if it makes it through safe mode). Computer will stay on forever if I pause before the windows boot. Fans all work fine, so I'm thinking its something thats getting loaded in windows boot process, even if in safe mode. The shut down occurs anywhere from 30 secs to 10 mins after the win logo appears. Can never get thru a System Restore or Virus check with out it turning off. It never shuts down if I stay in the "pre windows mode". Any suggestions? Does it sound like a virus? Any good ideas for a floppy based virus check?

Update for this post: I tried HD in another older compaq and it booted without failing (although MS did want to confirm windows activation codes)

Still puzzeled!

From what I've read, it might be a problem with your power supply (depending on how old the PC is), or your CPU is overheating. Here's a live Avast CD you can try:

check your start up, if there's "iiiii" folder outhere that is the virus, cause to reboot your system, you can remove it by system restore by safe mode or by shell prompt...
but HOW?
turn on your pc then press (F8) or F10 or F9 depending on your PC, new menu will appear, choose safe mode or by command prompt.
