Computer shuts down and turns on unexpectedly

August 18, 2011 at 06:38:34
Specs: Windows Vista, 3 GB
My computer turns itself off and on again after approx. 45mins to an hour of use. I have consulted someone who says this is due to a virus. What do I do? Is there a simple solution?

Is it a sudden shut off and not a systematic shutdown of Windows. I would guess if its a sudden shutdown you are looking at heat issue

none

You can uncheck automatically restart

and then the next time it blue screens, give us the EXACT error number that comes up....that will help to analyse your problem without guessing.

This is no solution unfortunately. It is as if the virus is playing with you, making fun of you even!! After a couple of hours use this time, the computer suddenly went through the normal Vista shut down procedure (so no blue screen). The computer stayed off for two minutes and then turned itself back on, and then off a couple of times before going back into being turned on for a long period (how long remains to be seen!) It is as if the virus has full control of the on/off switch, and is totally invisible to any of my virus software!!!

I've just had a look now to make sure I unchecked it, and yes, I did uncheck the automatic restart option.

Ok, try a full scan with malwarebytes and fix all it finds for starters

What is your virus software?

Trojan remover found nothing. Hitman Pro removed five viruses. I've just completed the scan and will keep you posted.
