Can't run programs

March 31, 2011 at 13:47:48
Specs: Windows Vista
I recently had a virus on my laptop and since removing it I haven't really had any problems, apart from when watching videos online they won't stay in full screen for long, and occasionally being redirected when clicking on google search results.

However, a little while ago AVG came up with something notifying me that some .exe was trying to run and as I hadn't touched anything I didn't allow it. Just after this I got 2 messages saying malware had been detected and I removed those.

Now I can't open any programs, like itunes, live messenger or firefox. Only IE seems to be working.

Can anyone help?

You're still infected if you have Google redirects going on.

The reason some of your programs aren't running may have something to do with your .exe file extensions being disabled by the virus (which is most likely a Rootkit).

First, please run Rkill from here: (you'll need to completely disable AVG before running this as it will be picked up as a trojan when it is infact not one. Also, please don't reboot the infected machine after Rkill runs as the malicious processes will respawn).

Next, download and run TDSSKiller from here:

Let me know if this fixes your redirect issue, then I can further assist you with your other issue of your programs not opening.

I am having the same problem. I've completely removed AVG while in safemode using add/remove programs and tried the solutions you suggest but even in safe mode I can't open the exe files for the Rkill and TDSSKiller.

Anything else I can do?
