cannot download ms updates

March 14, 2009 at 20:46:24
Specs: Windows XP
Very slow computer, pop ups, erratic service in hotmail. Haven't been downloading updates as I thought it was happening automatically.

MS update checks, finds and lets me try to up date then gives error msg 0x80246008. I follow the MS repair steps: services.msc, get to BITS and can not get it "started" message error code 2147024891. I have not been able to find a way past this step.

Also at computer start up I recieve message that ..... tofopoya.dll did not load. MS has checked my computer and agrees that the software is all legal!!!

Help? Also used MS malware removal tool, MS Scan, Norton 360 scan.

Thanks in advance!
Randy

Go on C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ find file hosts
verify

127.0.0.1 localhost
other string is delete

Try to scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
http://www.malwaresupport.com/mbam/...

or Scan with eset online Scanner

Thanks, I now do not have the Trojan problems that were discovered with the malware support download and scan. That worked quite well. (Norton did not find the problems)

I am still having the same problem getting to someplace where I can download the MS updates.

[MS update checks, finds and lets me try to up date then gives error msg 0x80246008. I follow the MS repair steps: services.msc, get to BITS and can not get it "started" message error code 2147024891. I have not been able to find a way past this step.]

Events log is started and dialog box says it cannot be stopped. It is set to automatic.

So is there a way around this? I have a recovery disc that I made when this computer was new. Will that help me in some way? (without totally reformatting everything?)

Thanks in advance,
Randy
