can I run two AV programs in the background

Specs: Windows XP
Hello, that you for allowing me to ask this question. Presently I use/run McAfee Internet Security Suite (At&t ) and I just download the Microsoft Security Essential. I've always preferred Microsoft, unfortunatly I am not sure if I can or should run both anti-viruses at same time. Will that cause any harm to my pc? I would really appreciate if I could get some help with this query. Thank you in advance

ciao

No, you shouldn't run two AV's in the background together. They will fight each other and slow down your machine, possibly causing other issues too. It's OK to have any program in addition to your AV so long as you only run it on demand (when you suspect something has crept through).

I prefer MSE and to have MalwareBytes on demand but that's just my opinion.

Please come back and let us know how you got on.

I can't say that it is bad as such to run both but I'd suggest you stick with one or the other.

Just to add the my #1

The main reason not to run two in the background together is that each one will be busy checking the other. This causes undue activity and the possibility of conflicts.
