Can I get a virus by opening a RAR file?

Specs: Windows Vista, 8GB
I'm curious, if I double-click on a .RAR file to open it in a WinRAR, can that by itself put a virus on my system?

PS. I'm not talking about running/opening anything in a RAR archive itself -- just opening it in a WinRAR.

Wow, thanks. I thought they were safe. Is there any way to disable those scripts in WinRar or at least to see what the script is?
