If it's hidden, then you don't know.

But why would you suppose that there was such a hidden device?

Currently, if you don't know whether there is a hidden observation
device in your own house or apartment, it is either because you
suspect some specific individual person of deviously placing such
a device, or because you are paranoid. In a very few years that
may no longer be true. They may by then be everywhere.

When I was a kid, I wondered if my parents had a hidden camera
to observe me. However, at that time, video cameras were way
too big to hide. Larger than a shoebox, at least. I was paranoid
due to age. I grew out of it.

Now my paranoia is due to advancing technology.

There are places around in most cities that sell security equipment. If you really have a reason to be concerned then they would know if there are tools to 'scan' for these device's 'electronic fingerprints' but they will probably cost you a lot for anything decent. I would assume that devices that transmit video or audio would be easier to detect than devices that record only though those would require access again to check the records. Remember that the cameras on laptops might be able to be activated by malware if the computer is on.
Generally most of us are too paranoid. Just keep your eyes open for the possibility and any signs but try not to worry too much unless there is a reason to worry.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
