black desktop no icons no toolbar - virus?

Specs: Windows Vista
My husband was on the Internet when a "AntiVirus" alert popped up in the web page. He clicked on it and the computer freaked out, acting like it was scanning for viruses. I noticed the ordeal and stopped the process since the antivirus scan was not our usual program. We were able to identify this new antivirus 'program' on our desktop, which we removed from our computer (it was called AV8). However, when we tried to use the Internet, it would keep redirecting to some web page with a warning about malicious software...
He ended up losing his temper and just turning off the computer. Now, when I reboot, the computer starts up, I enter my password to open the desktop and then...nothing. A black screen. No icons or toolbar. Right clicking does nothing. I can, however, start the task manager, but nothing shows to be running.

Is there any way of fixing this?

I am writing this from my lap top...which luckily still seems to be working just fine...

Here's a how-to written to prevent that from happening

Seeing that he clicked on it, your battle is just beginning.
Try tapping f8 to get in to safe mode with networking.
If you can get in to that then start by downloading all these to your desktop
1- rkill.exe
2- tdss killer
3- Malwarebytes
4- Trojan remover
5- Hitman Pro

Start them going down the list and reboot when done

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
