avp.exe hogging resources

Specs: Windows XP, 3GB RAM
Hi, avp.exe is running frequently and hogging cpu. Wasting hours of precious time. Would be really grateful for any help to solve this problem.

It's a Kaspersky Anti-Virus process (if you didn't know). You could try a newer version: http://www.kaspersky.com/kis_latest...

Or, try another AV..

Avast Free Edition: http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free...

Avast is very light on system resources where as Kaspersky and Norton are kind of heavy-duty. I would stay away from AVG, as it garbage in my opinion, too many false positives (when the AV software detects a file as a threat, when it truly isn't).
