Avast is not scanning my Windows Live Mail

Specs: Windows 7
I have a HP G72-60US notebook with Windows 7. I downloaded Avast Virus Protection -free. An error message tells me to disable SSL/TLS in my mail client. How do you do this? Does this mean that there is already an anti-virus protection on my Live Mail.
