Solved avast free quick scan is taking so long, scanning a lot more

Specs: Windows 7, 4.0 GB Ram/AMD 2.2GHz
Hi, there, I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this:

I recently changed my hard drive, as my old one was dying. Now, after I formatted, etc., & ran avast quick scan, the scans have been taking about 1 & 1/2 hrs, & scanning approx. 97 GBs.

Previously on my old HD, it would take approx. 1 hr. to scan, & about 53 GBs of data would be tested.

I have approx. the same amount of data stored as on my old HD(106GBs or so). My new HD is also the same size as my old one.

Any thoughts on this? I had stopped using the full scan, as it was taking way long when avast came out with the 2014 version, but then, that's beside the point. It is driving me batty(the long scan times for the quick scan), and I am almost ready to change antivirus programs!!!

I would appreciate some input, or any experience anyone is having with avast now? Thank you!!!

"Hope you had a good meeting, & have a nice breah kfast!!! Be sure to have a nice cup of coffee, too!!! YUM!"

Meeting went well, got an event in July & 2 in October. Organized people ( including myself ) to promote them at our Saturday & Sunday markets.
Had a Twinings Earl Grey today.

"I STILL wonder what the heck happened with the avast"
I don't even try to work out that sort of stuff, if it is corrupted & no message is displayed, telling me why, uninstall is it.
Process of elimination, which is what you are doing.

Let me know how it goes.

An AV's job is to kick in & warn you not to do something.

I never run an AV scan.

Lets see if /what is nasty on your comp.

Download OTL, save & run from your Desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
Double click the OTL icon to start the tool. (Note: If you are running on Vista or Windows 7 accept UAC alert)
1: When the window appears, underneath Output at the top, make sure Standard output is selected.
2: Select Scan all users
3: Change Drivers to All
4: Under the Extra Registry section, check Use SafeList
5: In the lower right corner, checkmark "LOP Check" and checkmark "Purity Check".
6: Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
Screenshots ( SS ) of 1 - 6
http://i.imgur.com/rvTDUlL.gif
When the scan is complete, two text files will be created on your Desktop
OTL.Txt <- this one will be opened
Extras.txt <- this one will be minimized

Upload the logs using this. I upload to Imgur.com for images & load.to for files ( neither need an account ) Give us the links please.

Hi, Johnw,

I've uploaded the logs to imgur. I'm sorry, but I'm not sure how I would find the links?

OK, if I did it right, here are the links:
OTL - Shortcut.lnk
Extras - Shortcut.lnk

Thank you for your time, and I hope this will tell you something. And, just out of curiousity, if you don't use an AV, how do you keep your PC clean? I myself use several things, my AV, MalwareBytesAntiMalware, & SuperAntiSpyware. Also AdvancedSystemCare, & gmer.

Well, this is what happened. After I did the scan, it didn't save the results to the desktop. They were in my documents folder, so I created a shortcut to the desktop.

OK, I could drag & drop them directly from my documents folder. Hope this is better:
Extras.Txt
OTL.Txt

I believe it is, as these are larger than the shortcuts.

Thank you again!

"Download OTL, save & run from your Desktop"
Note: Above are previous instructions.

For any further programs you run.
A lot of these special programs, are designed to be run from the desktop, which I will indicate in my instructions.
If you have your downloads going elsewhere, drag the program onto your desktop.

But, I do not understand what happened with the junkwarre removal tool.
I d/l it to my desktop, then clicked on it. The command screen came up, but it was blank(?). I see from the screen shot of of softpedia that it's supposed to say Junkware Removal Tool, etc.

Not sure what to do? Please advise. Um, unless it takes a little while for the info to show up? But, then, from my experience w/command prompt, it's supposed to show right away.

Thank you!

Hi, John, I am quite sure I followed your instructions, but am at a loss.
So, I was researching online, it seems other people have had this problem. I d/l the JRT Debug tool.
Then, I d/l something called DDS(this advice is from the devlopers of Junkware Removal Tool. Here is a link to that report:

Hope that helps(?). And, thanks! You taught me how to use a different tool. Although not sure when I'll be able to use it next!

It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Nearly bed time for you Scarlet & I am chair for a local community group, meeting is on tonight.

Here is more to do & I shall get back & answer your previous questions later tonight or in the morning.

I see you have both Revo & IObit installed. I use IObit as a seperate program. I would uninstall the AdvancedSystemCare package & just use the uninstaller.
Revo Uninstaller 64-bit is only supported in the Pro ( paid ) version.

Do a Standard Uninstall & then the Powerfull Scan to remove all the lurking bits.
http://i.imgur.com/olyCkcJ.gif
http://i.imgur.com/cKc5Chi.gif

As you can see from your logs, you had a lot of stuff installed, that you did not know had been installed.
A lot of programs, now give you the choice to install toolbars & other during the install. Either uncheck these items during install, or use Custom install. No more click, click during an install, you have to read after each click.

I use Softpedia, down the bottom of the page, they make you aware what Ad-supported programs the author of the program has included.
Sample pages
http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD...
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multim...
Users are advised to pay attention while installing this ad-supported application:
· Offers to change the homepage for web browsers installed in the system
· Offers to change the default search engine for web browsers installed in the system
· Offers to install StartNow Toolbar that the program does not require to fully function

Use Unchecky to help prevent these third party installs. Nothing is perfect, the badies are always ahead of the goodies.

OK, I will uninstall Revo & use either the Iobit uninstaller or my CCleaner. I have used & like the Iobit uninstaller, but I usually kept it for stubborn programs that don't seem to want to uninstall any other way.
And, I really like the Advanced System Care. I esp. like the SmartRam, and it also has homepage protection. I also think the scan is cool. Only thing that I really don't lke on it is the registry cleaner. Got into trouble once with the deep scan on that.

And, as far as NOT knowing I had something installed, well, unless it's something like the adware that gets bundled & you cannot get around NOT installing it(like with some of CNet's installations), I have a good idea what is on my PC.

Oh, yes, how I simply LOVE those installations that want you to install stuff you DON'T need! NOT!
We just have to be vigilant in how we do things on our PCs. So many people just want to fill your PC with malware crap.

But, say, what't the verdict as far as my avast scan goes? I hope that you were able to figure something out? 'Cuz as a whole, I think my PC is pretty clean. I use all my scanners, and I hardly have any threats or viruses. Of course, no AV or scannin program is 110%, so therefore my strategy is to use a few good programs to help prevent any threats or viruses.
And, if you haven't figured out what the issue is with my Avast scan, maybe you can suggest a good free AV for me to try? Thanks so much!
I used AVG a long time ago, have been very satisfied with avast, until now. I don't think too much about Microsoft Security Essentials, and can't afford to buy a program.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

"I have used & like the Iobit uninstaller"
Yep, particularly using the 2nd part when you can use Powerful Scan to remove all the lurking bits, something CCleaner doesn't do.

"I really like the Advanced System Care"
No problem.

"if you don't use an AV"
I do.
This is what I said.
"I never run an AV scan"
Most users ignore or don't google the AV's warning message, if they don't understand it. Click, click & they are infected. An AV cannot help after that. Special programs are needed.

Hi, John,
Oh, you mean you don't run an AV scan on an individual program that you're going to open? Ah, well, that's OK. No prob.

I also have adblock plus installed on my Firefox(my favorite & default browser). It's the add on, right?

I have Bonjour, 'cuz my son uses itunes, & I found out(wasn't too sure what it was for before that, LMAO) over the weekend that it is for using itunes. Actually, this is his laptop(mine died in Nov.), and he has an ipod & iphone, so he needs it to connect to his devices. Sigh! He is so electronically in tune. But, he is smart, & knows about a lot of different things, too, though.

OK, I'll try the avast quick scan later on today. If it STILL is really slow(and can you tell me what's with the deal with it scanning so much more data than before? I'm like, 'Hey, I think the quick is the full scan!', Anyways, that's what crossed my mind), perhaps you can tell me how you make Microsoft Security Essentials work for you.
'Cuz, although I have a lot of different programs, I don't have any threats to really speak of that could be slowing down my PC?
I do know that one of the first things that people talk about when the PC slows down is a virus.

Thank you so much, John!!

Hi, John,

I just wanted to let you know, my avast quick scan still took quite a long time, approx. 1&1/2 hrs., and still tested a WHOLE lof of GBs. 99.2, to be exact, and I have only 108 of data stored(?).

So, I wanted your opinion on this, you see, I had read, in reference to long running scan, to uninstall & reinstall the program. I had done that, BUT I did not use the avast uninstaller. Do you think possibly that might help?

If not, well, I guess I have to hunt for another AV.

Thanks for everything, and for listening!!! Appreciate it!!!

"like with some of CNet's installations"
My previous comment.
"WARNING: CNET Download.com downloads now come bundled with opt-out crapware and toolbars ( Same applies to Softonic )"
A user on the this comp, downloads via Softonic, reference below is from the AdwCleaner log.
"Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Tracing\SoftonicDownloader_for_revo-uninstaller_RASAPI32"

"Oh, you mean you don't run an AV scan on an individual program that you're going to open?"
The only time I ever use an AV scan, is when I have a download that is not from Softpedia. All I do is right click on that file & select MSE & hit > Enter. Then I repeat the process & select Malwarebytes. Takes seconds to scan.

"It's the add on, right?"
Correct Scarlet.

"I do know that one of the first things that people talk about when the PC slows down is a virus"
As the Symantec link says, the badies are finding different ways of infecting comps, other than through a virus.
Your AdwCleaner log, shows you what was removed.

What I have done so far, is prep your comp prior to trying to find why your Avast is slow. No point in doing anything else until that was done, I cannot assume anything.

Back in awhile, going to have breakfast.

Wow, thank you so much, John. You are one bad dude with the workings of the PC, and I appreciate all your time & efforts.

I just don't understand how come, ya know? It really is quite an enigma to me.
Esp., & I know I said this many times, but I just don't get the longer scan times & amount of data it's scanning.

Hope you had a good meeting, & have a nice breah kfast!!! Be sure to have a nice cup of coffee, too!!! YUM!

"BUT I did not use the avast uninstaller. Do you think possibly that might help?"
Maybe.

"perhaps you can tell me how you make Microsoft Security Essentials work for you"
Just install & forget. Default settings are perfect, very un-intrusive & low on resources.

I would uninstall Avast using their uninstaller ( a must ) & install MSE.
Then you can compare for yourself.

"what do you think about Comodo antivirus?"
Very good, but too intrusive ( too many questions, when it finds stuff it's not sure of )

All right, sounds good, John. Thanks so much for that info.

I STILL wonder what the heck happened with the avast. though. I think I'll try just once more by using their uninstaller, and if it continues to act that way, MSE it is!!!

Take care & God Bless, & thanks so much again!!! BTW, if I have some other problem that I think you could help with, could I PM ya? You're simply amazing with the PC, and would be nice to have you in my database!!!

Again, thank you, John. I appreciate it. And, I think this site with all the great people is wonderful, too.

I'lve had my own PC for only about 4&1/2 yrs. now. And, back in 2010, my homepage was being hijacked, I found this site, and asked about it. So, someone called XPuser4real told me to d/l WinPatrol, and it's been a great helper to me.

Anyways, will keep let you know how the avast goes. I'm running a scan now, but there doesn't seem to be much improvement. Like, it's been running almost 1/2 hr. now, and it's scanned only 32%, whereas before, it would have been closer to 60-70% by now.
Well, I'll let it finish, and see. But, I think I'm leaning towards going to MSE.

Talk to ya soon!

"will keep let you know how the avast goes"
Before you uninstall, run > Optimize MY PC.

Ok, John. Anyways, the scan JUST finished. Took 1 hr. & 39 min., tested 99.3GB of data. So, still doing too much for a quick scan if you ask me.

Running Optimize my PC now. I think I ran it before, since it's the Grime Fighter, but I it's not a free program?

Yeah, it wants me to buy a subscription. OR, did you just want to know what it found?
Well, it says there are 3 unneccessary apps, & getting rid of them will help my PC boot up faster.
Then, they want to optimize 4 systems settings to speed up my PC.
And, lastly, it wants to give me back 1.2 GB of disk space by cleaning up redundant files.

NOW, I am going to uninstall it. Like I said, dunno why it's doing that(scanning so much data for a quick scan), but it's kind of irritating me. I mean, if it was a FULL scan, then I'd understand. I gave it a chance. I'm optimistic, patient & persistent, but this is a little much!!! I think that was the big reason I stopped using AVG...scans were running a little too long.

You take care & God Bless. And, if there is anything I might be able to do for you, don't know what, though, don't hesitate to PM me, OK?

"Yeah, it wants me to buy a subscription"
I googled slow avast & one of the sites was an avast forum post. They recommended Optimize MY PC. That's all I know about that product.

"Yeah, it wants me to buy a subscription"
No good.

"NOW, I am going to uninstall it"
How is your replacement going?

"don't hesitate to PM me"
Thank you.

So far, I like MSE, John. Very nice. Scans are nice & speedy, and I assume that with their virus database, it will find any threats if they are there. And, if I start to have any probs with it that I can't find an answer for, don't be surprised if I come to you, OK? But, I am sure with your knowledge of the PC, I don't think you'd trust something that wasn't doing or going to do a good job. Of course, no AV or any other program that cleans out threats, spyware, etc. is 110%.
And THAT'S WHY I've come to trust my av(which you know, of course, was avast), & MBAM. I think having those 2 tools helps keep my PC clean.
And, essentially, I have had no real problems to speak of as far as that goes.

And, you are very welcome. I myself like to help people if I can, in some way, and I hope I can help you out someday. You're a real peach. I can't say enough how much I appreciate your taking the time to try & help me!!!

Take care & God Bless!!!

Never let me down Scarlet, have put it on all computers I work on, since MSE came out, probably 5 years ago now.

You have a huge amount of cleaning up to do, these 2 programs I use every day on all comps I fix, have been doing so for about 4 years.

I know you have CCleaner, so do I, but these are better.

Run both of these in this order.

Run Wise Disk Cleaner ( Run the 1st three tabs, left to right. I use default settings, leave boxes that are unchecked, unchecked ) Reboot when finished.

Run Wise Registry Cleaner ( Only use Registry Cleaner & with default settings. Don't use System Tuneup, that is for Experts, you really have to know what you are doing ) Reboot when finished.
