Anti virus cannot be installed

Specs: XP SP2, Core 2 duo E7500/2 GB Ram
My Friend's PC is having a strange problem. It was working fine almost till August without any problem, but when I uninstalled an outdated anti-virus (I don't remember which one) and tried to install avast home, PC started hanging, I formatted the entire disk and installed XP SP2 but still when I try to install any anti-virus, it will not do, and an error message will say that " there was an error while unpacking", or kind of.
When I tried to install Firefox, then also an error message is displayed with the following Title.
"XUL Runner
Error: Gecko: MinVersion not specified in application.ini"
Took the machine to the Dealer. They also did whatever they can, but to no avail. Tried the processor with some other motherboard, it is working fine, and the motherboard with other processor is also working fine, but both the processor and motherboard together will not allow any anti-virus or Firefox to be installed.
The dealer, sent the processor to intel for replacement, but they rejected twice saying that the processor is working fine with their test procedures. The motherboard also been rejected for replacement, because it is working fine with any processors.
PC config is: Core 2 duo E7500, ASUS P5KPL-AM/PS, 2 GB RAM, Standard PS and cabinet, syncmaster 2033 monitor.
I took the PC back, I installed Spybot search and destroy, and immunized. What could be the problem? Still I cannot install any anti-virus or Firefox.
