I think some people who are highly technically knowledgeable may put key loggers or other software on my computer, maybe even write their own program to avoid detection. any advice on finding out about that?

My first choice would be Malwarebytes (free version, not trial version). Good antimalware programs use both lists of known software and what they go after as well as behavior to find even most newer junk and remove them.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
