Why UNC work slower then mapped path

Specs: Windows XP
When I activate a application using UNC it's work much slower then activating the same application from a mapped path

i guess when you MAP a network drive windows cache files in its cache so opening apps seems faster but if you access through UNC it has to access the file directly over the network which is slower than Cache

I mainly talking about database application. Not only opening the apps is slower every action is slower and significant slower.
