There is not native way of making an application run from the system tray if the programmer did not design it that way. There are some third party applications that will remove running applications for the task bar.

Try these:

The easy way is to just create a shortcut to the program in the startup folder. If that doesn't answer you question you will need to explain the problem.

All Windows programmes will run in the background once they are started unless there is something there to stop them. That is what multi-tasking operating systems do. The hard part is to stop them running in the background.

Bear in mind that any programme will stop what it is doing if it needs some user inputer such as a mouse click or a something from the keyboard.

MS Excell will if it has some complex calculations to do, it will carry on doing them while the user gets on with something else, other wise it will be waiting for user input.

Media player certainly will when it has go something to play. It doesn't just stop playing whenever you bring another application into the foreground or minimize it. In fact Media player is playing while I am typing this. Clever eh!

By run in the background I mean I want it to not appear on the taskbar but the system tray, like uTorrent.

Thank you, Stuart. You led me to a wonderful little program called "TrayIt!". It works famously.

Best get the terminology right then there is no confusion. Background and foreground have very specific meanings.
