How to create a batch file for the below scenario

Specs: windows 7
Hello all,
I have one scenario, say I have one file which contains a single line character in the second line
like XXX_program.c. I want to strip only the xxx from this file and want to use it as a variable in some other file.
like set var=xxx. thanks in advance if some one can help me out with this.
