Startup folder launches a two line .bat file. Second line is exit. CMD window opens, runs the file but remains open. How do I get the window to close automatically? Thanks

Avast doesn't complete since it's resident.
Why don't you set Avast to load at startup?

Avast does load at startup but the tray icon does not appear.

And it does when you run your batch file?

Check in the Avast basic Settings that Show Avast Tray Icon is enabled.
Using msconfig, verify Avast is properly launched at startup.
Reboot & don't use your batch file.
Using Task Manager, look for AvastSvc & AvastUI processes.
Lastly, try to uninstall, then reinstall Avast (I'm not sure there is still a repair option)

Would be so easy just to have a way to exit from the batch file I created, no uninstall, reinstall, etc! That is all I want to do! Thanks anyway!

I'm afraid you are mistaken.
The fact the icon doesn't show is indicative of something not functioning properly.
IMHO, I would certainly investigate further, particularly after a malware infection...

Well, current situation is after reinstall last week, well after cleaning the infection which was not caught nor removed by Avast! Now using Hitman Pro and Malwarebytes along with avast. There are web sites where as soon as their window opens, XP freezes or reboots. I avoid all such sites now but am aware of some port weakness.

Hi !

A bit late, but it could be useful for somebody.
I wanted also to close the prompt windows after a batch, and all you need to do is to run your program with the "start" command.

In your case, your batch file should be:

cd d:\program files\alwil software\avast5\
start avastUI.exe /NoGUI
