keeps asking for password, which I successfully changed but keeps bringing up my id and an empty password box.

Are you one of those people who close the laptop be never actually shut it down?

Anyways, are you sure you have a working network connection?

If so, could you do the following?

[1] Restart your laptop
[2] Still not working? Download itunes again (without deleting/uninstalling the existing itunes files)
so you're copying files ontop of the existing files, hit copy & replace/overwrite for all of them.
[3] Still not working? Reset the password again, check your mail... & try again
[4] Still not working? Contact apple
