How To Read a 9-track RSTS/E Tape Under VMS?

Specs: RSTS/E V6, MicroVAX II (KA630)
Hi All:

I am trying to recover some backups from two old 9-track tapes. They were created ~1980 under RSTS/E version 6.

I have VMS 7.3 on a MicroVAX II and a functional TU80 tape drive. Both systems are fully functional so it is not a "Jurassic computing" hardware issue.

I have tried several strategies including BACKUP and EXCHANGE, but is is "no go" so far. The tape density is unknown, but likely 800 or 1600 given the age of the tapes. I have tried all densities.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

I am not an RSTS/E person in any way, but I recall that it used the same utility as the initial versions of VMS namely DSC (disk save and compress). I'm not sure whether or not the utility still exists on V7.3 though.

Also, have you tried to look at the tape using DUMP for example? Perhaps an examination of the header records will provide some clues. You should be able to MOUNT/FOR the tape and dump the header records.
