XP Photo Printing Wizard problems

Specs: Windows XP SP3
I do like and use Windows XP Photo Printing Wizard. I was using a simple HP printer only when I installed the Office Jet 4580. The hardware and software are all working correctly except later after the installation the XP Photo Wizard was not accessable. When I try to print several pictures on one page my computer can not find the wizard even in a file search! The print function is not there to even print. I went to several web sites and followed their recommendation but to no avail. I have Windows XP Service Pack 3 and reinstalled it as well. The computer says there are no files or programs of Windows XP Photo Printing Wizard. I can print my pictures, but not two or three in arrangement on the same page. I have to print them through the bitmap format! If I want to change the size of the photo, then I have to go in and alter the size by the attributes of the photo.

Try this:

Click Start
Click Run
Then type in: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

If that doesn't work, do a Search for the shimgvw.dll and make sure you have it.
It should be located in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory.

If you can not locate it then you can download it off the web.
Here is one place I found:

Okay I downloaded the shimgvw.dll file but there is no change. The computer still does not recognize any files of the Photo Printing Wizard program. I am continplating wiping out the harddive completely, reinstalling Windows SP3, and reinstalling my old dinosaur printer. The new HP J4580 changed everything around so I may get rid of it or use it separately from the computer. I am convinced that they won't work together. I spoke with HP technical support since posting my problem a few hours ago. Their technician could not help me! He had no idea about Windows XP SP3 or the Photo Printing Wizard. He was of little or no help. I have little faith in HP support.

Try this first:

Click Start
Click Run
Then type in: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

The /u will Unregister the dll

Then
Click Start
Click Run
Then type in: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

and reregister it again just to make sure.

There are a number of web hits for shimgvw.dll
I'd try hunting the web a bit before wiping the hard drive.

Okay I did that but apparently there are several files changed, missing or corrupted. I can now print a picture under "My Pictures" but the Wizard still does not work. The computer will immediately print a single picture when I select print from the top tab. These pictures are on my harddrive as files (jpeg) but I can not select more than one on a page.

I am working on pictures taken while on a movie location. I am trying to put them together 3-6 to a group on a single page.

There are no .dll files again in System 32/regsvr32. I am so frustrated. I saved the photo files and all the other programs to DVD back-up. I have no choice but to wipe out my harddrive and start over. Thanks for your help anyway. :0[

Hi,

I see that you say that there are no .dll files again in System 32/regsvr32

regsvr32 is a program not a folder, so you are not going to find dll files in System 32/regsvr32

Are you sure you followed Mikes instructions in Response #3.
You must have the shimgvw.dll in the folder WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder, then you can follow the instructions to run regsvr32.exe

Before wiping your hard drive have you:
a. tried uninstalling your HP printer and/or
b. used System Restore to restore your PC to its state before the printer was installed.

System Restore should bring you back to where you were before the printer was installed.

I did find shimgvw.dll in the system 32 directory. I can still only print pictures either in "Paint" or under "My Pictures" one picture per page at a time. The computer still shows there is no Photo Printing Wizard. I am currently formating and installing a new harddrive. Then, if I can't get this old one working, I can use the other one. I do have a computer repair technician who can fix it for me for about a third the cost of a new computer. I am still game on getting this to work.

Reinstalling the printer software did not help. I tried to use System Restore but it would only go back to February 28th, 2010. I installed the printer slighly before that.

Hi,

Have you tried uninstalling the HP printer - but not re-installing it.

I am going to wait until this week. I decided to take it in for repairs. I am getting too many error messages and files not found. I seem to be making it worse.
