Specs: Windows XP
Greetings, thanks in advance for your help.

I copied a pdf file from my xp operating system and tried to open it on my wife's vista os. Just got a bunch of crazy symbols. Don't use vista much so not sure what the deal is. Is it possible to open a xp pdf file on vista?

PDF files aren't OS specific. Is the same version of Acrobat Reader (or whatever you use for PDF's) on both machines? Was the original PDF document from the XP machine created with any specific program?

Depending on how you got it on to your wife's machine, there is a SLIM chance that the file was corupted in the process, but Adobe should have warned you that there were problems with the file first.

try recopying the file and copying it via a different means.

As T-R-A state pdfs are independent of the operating system which makes them a great way to share between Mac, Windows, and the other operating systems so long as they have and adobe reader prg available to them.

You do not mention which software you are using to view PDF.I am using classic PDF reader/viewer to read PDF files and it works great with me. You may try, it is available on Cnet free downloads here.
