I stopped using Word several years ago as it was getting too expensive to buy and stay legal.
That said... I saw a sale offer and bought the Office suite of Office 2010. (win7 64bit)

I am basically writing a biggish 200 page article and need to index the chapters like I do in Libreoffice. with a TOC

Nothing fancy, Just Heading 1 for the Section title and Heading 3 for each chapter in a Section.

I moved all the text into Word2010. I liked the way you can change fonts.
Then I came unstuck.
Choosing the automatic Table 1 or 2 I tried to add the headings which I had made heading1 or heading3 with the styles menu.
No entries appeared with the table update tag.

Then I had an Idea.
I imported fom Libreoffice, not only the text, but the TOC as well. This did the trick.
I now had 150 pages of text with the 17 chapter headings listed in the Contents table.

What am I doing wrong in WORD ?, ...not being able to generate the TOC directly without falling back on the Libre office work-around.!!!

I would really appreciate someone explaining what I must be doing wrong.

PS with the imported TOC, I can add headings in the text.
When I update the TOC the added heading is listed with page number.

My march 23rd query seems to have no takers, and I'm not surprised.

Well I installed this little program that sticks on the menu bar, 'menu'.

Clicking this opens up the lot, all old style WORD drop down menus.

This program works the way, menu wise, that I had hoped for.

So now I can explore the word 2010 features and not worry about where the
heck is, e.g. standard automatic TOC button is.

So how can I explain the new system not working? Well I can't, I just bought my way out of trouble.

Bye and I'll keep looking at word queries that may pop-up. :-))
