Word 97 Problem Please Help

February 4, 2011 at 06:41:46
Specs: Windows 7
This message pops up every time Word 97 opens:

"Microsoft Word 8.0"

"The Windows registry has reported that one or more required files are damaged or missing. to correct the is problem, run the Word setup program."

The dictionary appears missing and spell-check won't let me add words.

I keep re-installing it but it eventually comes back to this.

OS = Windows 7 Home Premium

**Please do not suggest 'upgrading', I have Word 2003 and 2007 but I WANT to use Word 97.

I have Word 2003 and 2007 but I WANT to use Word 97.

UNinstall 2003
UNinstall 2007

That will eliminate two possible conflicts.

Then see if 97 plays nice with Win 7

ADDED:

Have you checked to see if 97 is even supported by Win 7?
You might need to use the XP emulation.

According to MS, Word 97 is only compatible with 32 bit machines.

Thanks people for your replies.

What is XP emulation?

Anyway found a solution from another site: I had to right click the icon, under properties, compatibility, click, 'run this program in compatibility mode for' and using the drop down arrow, I selected, 'windows 95'.

It worked! :D
