Word 97 Normal.dot gone wonky

Dell / Dimension e521

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 2.204 GHz / 2046 MB
Had a power outage the other day. When I opened an existing file, the formatting had gone berserk. Bulleting a set of lines added bullets to all lines, plus all the styles. I tried deleting and re-generating Normal.dot, no joy. The error happens on both new and existing files. I'm using Word 97 on XP Pro.

Run an Office Repair.

Can't. I no longer have the CDROM (lost in recent move).

Well, I dunno. There's only me here. Great question, though. I'll see if I can find out.
