Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 1.989 GHz / 510 MB
I've installed Office 2000, and all programs work fine except Word. It starts to initialize, then goes to a grey screen and freezes. I've tried reinstalling, repairing, and even using another install disk. No change. I've run all System Works applications, no change. What next?

It could be your global template is corrupt or there is something loading automatically in your Word Startup folder that is misconfigured or corrupt.
To check:
Go to Start
Click on Run.
Type winword.exe /a
This launches Word with a clean, empty template and no add-ins.
If Word launches OK, it is probably either a bad normal.dot file or a corrupt add-in
To get a new clean template, close Word and do a search of your computer for normal.dot file and delete it. If there is more than one, rename or delete ALL of them.
Now, when you launch Word, it will look for normal.dot and since it can't find it, it will recreate a new clean one.
The normal.dot file is a hidden system file and may not show up when you do a search for it.
If you are unable to find it,
Go to My Computer
Click the Tools menu
Choose Folder Options.
Click on the View Tab
Put a check where it says, "Show hidden files and folders"
and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
and "Hide protected operating system files".

If you still can't find it, you can try looking here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Thanks for helping me. I reinstalled Word, and it continues to not run. I looked for a normal.dot, but there isn't one. I don't think the program is advancing far enough to make one before it crashes. When I try to start the program, it goes to the screen, paints a white workspace, then goes gray. When I then try to close it I get the "end program now?" box, and then it will clear.

Did you do the

Go to Start
Click on Run.
Type winword.exe /a

You need to use the /a

What happens when you do, is that when it
"try to start the program, it goes to the screen, paints a white workspace, then goes gray." ?

You can also try looking inside of Word's Startup Folder as
there may be an add-in in there that might be causing the problem.
The folder is usually located at:
C:\Windows\ Application data\ Microsoft\ Word\ Startup

Or possibly in your user profile application data folder.

Or, search your hard drive for startup

If there are any files in there, move them all to another location and try launcing Word.

If it works, then move the files back one at a time until you find the culprit.
