Solved Why do I get error message when starting MS Office app?

Specs: Windows 10
Each time I open a document, after about half a minute I get this error message: "We're sorry, but Word [or Excel] has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?" The there are three boxes below - Repair Now, Help and Close.

I've already tried to run the Troubleshoot Compatibility tool but it only solves the problem temporarily.

I've checked a variety of forums and they all describe problems and solutions when running the program on Windows 8. I've been running this on Windows 10 since Windows 10 has been around without a problem. Suddenly now I have this situation.

I did notice that a new digital signature was downloaded about one month ago, which would coincide when this problem started.

Try re-installing Office or run the Office Diagnostics from within any Office application, eg:

In Microsoft Word, click the large round Office icon then click "Word Options"

Choose "Resources" from the options menu, then click "Diagnose" (run Microsoft Office Diagnostics).

That's for Office 2007, I don't know if it applies to later versions.
