What are dbf files?

Specs: Windows XP, 2.80 ghz/2 gig
Hi I am at a friends place and he has several files with file formats i have no idea about. They are dbf, sbn, shp, shx and sbx. We don't know what they are and the sending party doesn't know either. Incredible as that sounds to me these people don't know what they are doing. I am a linux user so this is all another world to me but i do remember something called OBDC or something that was part of the windows control panel. I don't know if i have the right initials or not. I did some googling about dbf files and came up with this http://www.dbfree.org/ . Is this what we need to use? To open at least the dbf files? What are the other files?
I hope someone can help as i have no clue :0)

OK I have no idea what all that is. Can you tell me if you know anything because my friend is clueless too. I understand the word geography but that is it!

It appears you probably have ArcGis or ArcView data files.

We don't know what they are and the sending party doesn't know either.

If the sending party does not know what he has and you and your friend don't know,
then why bother?

Look here for an intro to ArcView:

Oh thanks that filled in some gaps. The person with the odd files and i were on the phone last night talking about it when i saw your reply. He is dealing with several non-english speaking countries and there seems to be a lot of mis communication going on. Anyway thanks so much i think you have hit the nail on the head and he will just have to sort things out from here. I told him he has to get right back to whoever created the file and they must tell him what software they use. I thought it might be a handheld GPS/geographic device of some kind!
