Solved WB opens in Protection View after update to Windows7

Microsoft Office 2010 professional

Specs: Windows 7
We're being updated from XP to Windows7 and one of my users is now unable to open an Excel WB that he created. Prior to his update, it opened in Excel 2010 but now, after a third user opened it at home on his company laptop, it's now a 97-2003 version. I know, this probably sounds confusing with the different people so bear with me:

Mike, user 1, created an Excel2010 workbook while his OS was Windows XP, and viewed it for weeks as 2010.

Brad, user 2, accessed the WB from his company laptop, OS Windows7, but saved it as Excel 97-2003.

Mike gets Windows7 and can only open the WB as 97-2003 in Protection View with no way to take it out of that view to make changes.

Me, user 3, still on Windows XP, can open it as 97-2003 and can change it but not save it as 2010. If I try to open it in 2010, I get the 'Office has detected a problem and cannot open this file' error. If I open 2003, then I can open and change values in the spreadsheet but not the type and when I try, I get the same 'office has detected a problem' error.

What do you think? Is Excel 97-2003 incompatible with Windows7? did saving it that way mess it up? Why can't I change it back? And why is it in protected mode for the creator?

Suggestions are appreciated!

If it was created as a 2010 workbook, that means, assuming everyone is using 2010, Brad had to do a Save-As to get it as a 97-2003, which means, Brad still has the original 2010 on his laptop.
It will not have Brads updates, but you should be able to get at the workbook.
