HI...I want to do a vlookup. The data is on 2 seperate excel files. So. In file 1 - I need Joe's information from file 2. So I need it to look for 'Joe' in column A and return what the value is from column G to file 1. thanks :)

With "Joe" in cell A1 of Sheet 1
In cell B1 of Sheet 1 enter the formula:

=VLOOKUP(A1,Sheet2!A1:G20,7)

This will lookup Joe's name in the first 20 rows of Column A on sheet 2
and return the value from column G

The format for linking across files is something like this:

=VLOOKUP("Paul",'C:\[book.xls]Sheet1'!A1:B1,2)

AARRGGH!!

How did I miss that he was going file to file not sheet to sheet, brain is definitely mush tonight.

Revised formula:

=VLOOKUP(A1,[Book2]Sheet1!$A$1:$G$20,7)

This will lookup Joe's name in the first 20 rows of Column A in Book 2, Sheet 1
and return the value from column G
