Using Smart Quotes changed words with apostro

November 9, 2011 at 05:15:00
Specs: Windows 7
I am using MIcrosoft Word 2007 in my Dell computer. When writing a document, every time I wrote a word with an apostrophe in it (can't, isn't) it automatically inserted an extra space or two like this: can 't. The only way I could get it to stop was to unchoose my Smart Quotes. ( Go to Word Options, then proofing, then auto-correct options, then auto-format as you type and uncheck Smart Quotes). I'd rather not do this because I want the
smart quotes. My only fix is to go to an old document written by Word 2003 and cut and paste it into my 2007 document. Why is this happening and can it be fixed? Alison P

Perhaps someone added a Replace Text as You Type?

Go to Word Options,
Proofing,
Check and see if someone add a "space apostrophe" rule.

Run a Diagnostic.

Thanks Mike. I don't see any rules about apostrophes. I made a document and typed don' t and then imported a correct contraction don't and right clicked on the correct one. Under styles it said "Update Normal to Match Selection" but it didn't seem to make any difference. I will take your advice and run a diagnotic. Hopefully that will help. Thanks for your suggestions! I went to a Help feature for Word 2007 and someone was having this same problem. They changed their font and got rid of the space. I tried that (changing to Times New Roman) and that seemed to do the trick. Thanks everyone for taking time to answer me. Hopefully, everything will be okay now! Alison P

What Font were you using that gave you the problems?

Well that's the funny part. I always use Times New Roman in my manuscripts. I went to the list of fonts and chose it again and the spaces stopped appearing. Very weird. But I thought it was weird that I could uncheck Smart Quotes and that worked also. This never happened before I got Word 2007. I wish they would just leave things alone! Thanks for your help and interest. Alison P
