Solved Trying to sum numbers based on their drop down category

Specs: Macintosh
I'm trying to sum a set of numbers that share a drop down category assignment. For Example:

In Column B Rows 2 thru (x) are numeric values

In Column D Rows 2 thru (x) are drop down menu assignments (Food, Gas, Utilities)

I want to get the sum of all the values in Column B that share the same drop down value assignment.

Can anyone help?

✔ Best Answer
SUMIF(range, criteria, [sum_range])

The range reference and the sum_range reference must be the same length

Hardcoded:

=SUMIF(D2:Dx,"Food",B2:Bx)

or put Food, Gas, Utilities, etc. in a range of cells, e.g. F2:F4 and use:

=SUMIF($D$2:$D$x,F2,$B$2:$B$x) and drag it down
