Sum totals based on TWO values

Microsoft Excel 2003 (full product)

Specs: Windows Vista, P4/1gb
I have a spreadsheet with three columns. Lastname, Firstname, Billed Amount.

I need to total the billed amount for each customer. In some cases, there may be a customer named Smith, John and Smith, Bill. So I need to be able to check BOTH lastname and firstname before I total. How can this be done?

Sounds like SUMPRODUCT is the function to use.

This will return 8 since there are 4 occurance of John Smith, each wth a 2 next to his name.

        A       B      C      D	
1     John    Smith    2   =SUMPRODUCT((A1:A9=$A$1)*(B1:B9=$B$1)*C1:C9)
2     Tom     Smith    1	
3     Bill    Smith    2	
4     Tom     Smith    1	
5     John    Smith    2	
6     Tom     Smith    1	
7     John    Smith    2	
8     Tom     Smith    1	
9     John    Smith    2
