Why does my =sum formula result in a negative total? The exact same number should be the positive? I have the same problem when I range in a column for the sum total in the status bar.

It's kind of hard to diagnose your problem given the limited amount of information you've provided. Whenever I send my mechanic an email and ask him why my car is making a noise, he never seems to be much help. ;-)

You need to give us some specifics. For example, Does this happen every time, in every spreadsheet or just a specific range of cells?

Stuff like that might help us help you.

DerbyDad03...You're correct but I was hoping that a lot of folks would reply that this was a common problem and tell me how to fix it. But it's very intermittent. Sometimes if I range a column from bottom to top I get the negative sum in the status bar...and if I run the range on the same column from top to bottom I get the same number but it's a positive. When I sue the SUM icon directly below a column I will get the negative but if I drop down one row and run the SUM icon (skipping the row that gave me the problem) I get the same number and it's a positive total. This issue is also intermittent. I just now ran into a different scenerario with a different calculation but the same problem. I have to values in 2 cells, one larger than the other. I enter = larger-smaller and I get a negative result. If I try the formula in another cell I get a correct answer.

DerbyDad03...OK I found the problem. For some reasons there are certain cells in my spreadsheet where the 'Cell Format' - Number tab is set to 'Custom' and the Type is showing -?,???;-?,???

I have no idea where that came from or why that 'Type' would be of value to anyone. Anyway it was an easy fix and I guess I just need to pay closer attention.

Thanks for help though. Your questions promted additional research to better explain the problem. In doing so I stumbled on the cause.
