Are the Spellchecker and Calculator add on products?

The calculator on my system is not part of the Office suite, it resides in the \System32\calc.exe file.

Not sure what is going on when you say spellchecker is open at start and will not close it will not allow access to apps

Please describe, in detail, exactly what is happening.
Step by step.

As for your calculator you could try this:
Go to Control Panel
Click Add or Remove Programs
In the panel on the left click 'Add/Remove Windows Components'

Make sure the Accessories and Utilities box is checked.
Click on the Details button
Make sure the Accessories box is checked.
Click on the Details button

Uncheck the Calculator box

Click Ok
Click OK
Click Next

Once the wizard is finished, repeat the procedure above but this time Check the calculator box to reinstall it.

regards spellchecker there isn't much more to say it is as stated if and when I open word or excel the spellcheck box is already open and will not complete it will not close nor will it finish the spell check as it reverts to the beginning of the doc and starts all over again the only way to then cl;ose the program is with the task manager

regarding calculator the calculator opens fine but when attempting to input figures the numbers just change. for example as I enter the number2157, I enter 2 then1 the display registers 1 I enter 5 the display reads 5 I enter 7 then the display just reads 7 etc etc. the calculation signs are inoperative such as +-*/ this started to play up at the same time as the spellcheck messed up.

For the Spellcheck, try to do a Detect & Repair
On the Task Bar,
Select Help,
Select Detect & Repair

For the Calculator, just reinstall a new copy
Go here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...
On line #344 in the right panel, download the Calc.exe

After you get it unzipped, copy/move it to
C:\WINDOWS\system32

just let it overwrite the old version.

If you can't get at the Help file to do a repair,
Go to Control Panel
Add or Remove Program

Find the MS Office entry
There should be a Change button.
Click on it and follow directions for repair.

OK, try this:

Have your installation disks handy.

Close Word.

Then navigate to:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\???? the ? stands for 4 numbers,
(on my system they are 1033, 1034 and 1036)

RE-name the folders

Start Word

If Word starts ok, press the F7 key to start the spell checker, and Word will tell you that the module has not been installed and asks you to (re)install it.
Word will install the module from scratch and hopefully the problem is solved.

have reinstalled calculater no change
I have no idea about your calculator, if you overwrote the original, and it is still not functioning properly then the problem is deeper in the system.

Do you have a registry cleaner that you could run and see if that clears up any problems?

tried the 1033 file rename and the program works but the spellchecker started and failed to quit again without my reinitialising it even with the folder renamed there is no difference I appreciate ytour efforts here by the way Thanks for taking the time and trouble to try to help. I guess it is a deep problem I just cant think of anythng that I may have done to cause a registry change except that I have added an external keyboard and mouse to my laptop due to a keyboard malfunction everything worked fine though until recently?

Have you tried uninstalling the new keyboard & mouse and seeing if Words works?
Make sure you have the latest updates and drivers.

Might be worth the try.

Sorry I can't offer more.
