Show a match if two names appear in the same row in Excel?

May 13, 2013 at 07:57:54
Specs: Windows 7
I have a large data set. In two columns there names; lets say A = buyer(s) name(s), C = seller(s) name(s).

There may be 1-4 names, first and surname in each cell, seperated by a comman.

I'm looking for a function that can highlight where one name appears in both columns.

In my head I need a function that picks out different words in each cell. Then a match function.

Any help would be great, I'm at a total loss.

Thank you in Advance!!

Maybe the reason that you are a "total loss" is because this is not something Excel was designed to do. Dealing with complicated text manipulations is not one of Excel strongest features.

It might be easier if you used the Text-To-Columns feature to separate the names into their own cells. Based on your description of "first and surname in each cell, separated by a comma" you could use the Delimited option and choose the comma as your delimiter.

Once you had a set of columns for your sellers and a set of columns for your buyers, you could any of the various match or lookup functions to search for matching names.
