|Well, first off, softball games don't usually end in a tie.|
Even in recreational leagues where there is a time limit there can be rules to ensure that no game will end in a tie, e.g.
1 - No inning may start after 7 PM
2 - If the game is tied when Rule 1 is in effect, the score will revert to the score at the end of the latest inning when one team was in the lead.
3 - If no inning ended with one team in the lead, the Home team will be awarded a Win.
If you must deal with ties, then one method is to give each team a half a win and half a loss.
These formulas gave me the same values as my newspaper shows for the AL East standings as of July 3, 2011.
