recover overwritten Excel files

March 27, 2011 at 00:58:54
Specs: Windows 7
I saved an Excel worksheet with the file name Account Ledger 2010-2011. It was overwritten when I transferred a file with the same name from an external hard-drive. Since the file was stored in my hard drive it was overwritten. I could not recover it. It contains important data. Please help me.

You probably cannot recover the data.

The only suggestion I have is to look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/820741

This is for recovering Corrupt Data,
but the Use a recovered copy of the document section
and the Use the "Open and Repair" command are the only way you might have of getting anything.
Chances are extremely slight.

I know this is the last thing you want to hear, but Backup, Backup, Backup.

You seem to be in Win7, which may be good for you. Go to the file in question, in Explorer. Right click and select Properties, then the Previous Versions tab. If VSS is turned on, and if you have viable restore points or a Windows backup, you may find a previous version you can recover.

There are third party progs also, like PC Inspector, but I'm not sure they work on a transferred-over file.
