problem opening ms office files

August 30, 2013 at 15:26:27
Specs: Windows 7
When I try to open these files from windows explorer the error message "parameter is invalid" comes up. I have no problem opening them from within the office applications.
This has come on quite suddenly.

Create a temporary Word and Excel file on your desktop, then try opening each directly from there. Does it give the same results?

Hi, xps86,

Thank you for taking the trouble to help me. I did what you suggested but I was not able to open the file from the desktop.

Open up Excel, go to File > Excel Options > Advanced tab > General section and un-check "Ignore other applications that use DDE". If it's already un-checked, check it, close Excel, open it back up, and un-check it. Then close Excel again and try opening that new, blank Excel file from your Desktop.

If that doesn't work, I'd try doing a repair on the Office Suite. Go to your Control Panel > Uninstall a program, and find Office among the list. Right-click it and click Change. From the new window, click Repair. You may need your installation disc/files again.

Unfortunately, this particular problem doesn't have a clear fix. Based on my research, neither of these fixes helped everyone with this problem. Since you said it happened not too long ago, I'd lastly try a System Restore to a point before this problem occurred as it may not be Office specifically that's causing the problem. It's too bad that error message isn't more descriptive.
