printing an A4 book - which free software?

Specs: windows vista, 2 gb
I'm helping a friend to print an A5 size comic book in black and white with images. I managed to get word to print the text in landscape mode but as there are 2 pages per A4 sheet, there is not much space between the 2 columns of text in the middle as I'm using 2 columns per page and his original first book was done by a top printing firm. Firstly is there anyway to change the format of the columns in word to make them smaller so that there is more space in the middle of the A5 book for where the 2 staples go?

Secondly, I've spent hours creating 2 text boxes 2 per page and aligned them and it looks good and answers the problem of spacing as above due to making the 2 text boxes the right size to create the space however i just realised that if there is 80 pages, the pages wont print in the right order as i just realised i would have to print from the centre 2 pages first and then re-jig the book so that all 80 pages are paignated correctly as otherwise the wrong pages will be under the centre 2 pages and so on. im not a publisher as you can tell and this is a nightmare for me. Can anyone help?

Finally is there any free software out there i can dowload to insert the text into and it to print in A5 format and in the correct order.

Would be really appreciated

Do not know the answer to your question,
but do know it would be easier to do if you used MS Publisher.

If you don't have MS Publisher, try this:

You need a Desktop Publishing software to do the proper pagination. The space for the staples is called the gutter. If it is to be stapled, folded, and trimmed you may have to add additional margin and adjust the gutter to maintain centering. You may have to adjust the text to maintain proper page breaks.

thanks mmcconaghy for that. i've downloaded a free 60 day trial of microsoft publisher however i've noticed that in word 2007, the column width can be changed so this may suffice.
thanks for all your replies.
