pc to mac convert must open xls password file

Specs: Macintosh
I completely switched over to Apple MAC from a Windows PC world then got rid of my PC. All my Excel files are on an external drive which I still have. I later realized I had some important excel files that I had put password protection on and now I cannot open them. I don't have Excel on the Mac. How can I open the files? Must I purchase Excel for the Mac?

You question either has extraneous information or doesn't make sense.

What does the password protection have to do with the fact that you don't have Excel on your Mac?

In any case, try this link:

OpenOffice is a free application that can typically deal with any file created in MS Office.

because the password protection is a feature in Excel. Since I no longer have Excel (I only have the Excel files from my Windows pc), is there a way to open the files without purchasing Excel. My understanding was there there may be a way but having a password enabled may complicate it.

I'm not an expert on OpenOffice but a Google search on password protected Excel files seems to indicate that OpenOffice 3.2 and later can open them.

If I were in your position, I would certainly try it since it's free.

If it is your understanding "that there may be a way" to open them without purchasing Excel, why don't you share what that "understanding" is?

Better yet, why don't you try whatever it is that you "understand" can open them?
