right-click on the cells you want to input data into, choose Format Cells...choose Text in Number tab. Easy?

Hi,

If you don't want to pre-format the cell(s) as text, enter a single quote before the 1/2, :
'1/2

Excel will treat the entry as text.
The single quote will not show in the cell, (but will be visible in the formula bar when the cell is selected).

Regards

PS if you try formatting your 1/2 cell as text after data entry, you will get 39845 - the date value that Excel uses for 01 Feb 2009.

Also, I just looked and in my Excel 2000 under Format, Cells, I have a Fraction selection just below the Percentage choice.
