Phil, sorry I took so long getting back here. I did in fact make sure I clicked the "OK" button. In fact I unchecked the empty trash button and then re-checked it and exited Outlook all to no avail. HOWEVER - I found the problem. For some reason the in the list of processes running Outlook was listed twice. I deleted that process and re-started Outlook (and of course all the deleted e-mails were still there) then exited Outlook and all the deleted e-mails were automatically deleted. Problem solved. Had I rebooted my computer during this whole situation then the second Outlook instance would have been wiped out and next time I used Outlook it would work properly and deleted the deleted e-mails on exit.
