Solved OpenOffice installation affecting W7 desktop icons and fonts

August 8, 2013 at 03:43:58
Specs: Windows 7
Installed OpenOffice 4.0 last week. Since then I have suddenly had enlarged and jumbled desktop icons and fonts on start-up, occasional black strip on right side of screen, 'movement' in screen image (both fixed by rebooting), sleep mode not working properly. Could there be any connection or is this coincidental?

Thank you for all suggestions. I ran a major 5 part scan on Friday which repairs/replaces any corrupt files. I also have a new monitor now so all is currently working well. Thank you again for your help.

Hi SB.,

It does not sound like an issue because of Open Office.

Perform a virus scan on the system using malwarebytes. Click the link mentioned below for malwarebytes:

Perform a complete scan.

Thanks & Regards

Likely this is not related OpenOffice 4.. and if your scan comes back clean..

Update your video driver.. Will need more info to get you a link on that (make/model of workstation and/or video card)

Adjust your screen resolution - Start > Control Panel > Display > Change Display Settings (make sure you set to recommended)

Auto-Adjust your monitor - This is done on the monitor itself.

Are you saying that when you reboot its no longer enlarged and jumbled icons? If so, is there a certain application (e.g. openoffice) when you run it that causes the screen to change resolution?

Thanks.

I have run Malwarebytes so know my system is clean. The settings for icon size, resolution are still the same as they should be. But it is very strange. Having done a quick System Restore each day to restore the icon and font/display size to what it should be, if I turn off the computer for an hour or so at lunchtime it is absolutely fine but by the next morning when I switch on again I have the same problems - desktop items enlarged and jumbled. Overall display/font enlarged e.g. on email program. Settings for icon size / screen resolution are still what they should be. I don't know what else can have caused this. It could not just be the monitor which has also started not always displaying coming out of sleep mode - I have to repeatedly press the monitor on/off switch which I normally never touch at all. So I probably need a new monitor. Odd that these two things have started to happen at the same time. My computer itself is only about 16 months old. Any advice before I give in and ring BT tech staff would be appreciated!
