Good morning! Very suddenly, none of my Office files (Word, Excel) will open when I click on shortcuts or the files themselves in their folders. If I open the application then go to file>open and choose the same file, it will open just fine. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!

Open any folder and choose Tool...Folder Options. Click the File Types tab.
Scroll down to .docx, xlsx, etc. and make sure that they are still associated with Word, Excel, etc.
Thank you. As I'm using Vista, I don't have the Tool > Folder option, but I think I found that area anyway. I restored all the defaults, but I'm still getting the same error. The error is this: Windows cannot find 'C:\myfilename.xls'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
This only happens when I'm trying to open a file by clicking on the file name. When I'm opening the same file from within the application, it works. This is with Excel and Word.
Thanks again.

Is it just Office applications? What about PDF's or .txt docs or files that should open in other apps? I ask so that we can narrow this down to Office vs. Vista.
i have the same problem. it is only office files. pdfs work fine
You might want to find an Excel file, right click on the file, select Properties down the bottom,in the Properties window make sure the it reads:
Type of File: Excel Worksheet
Opens With: Microsoft Excel for WindowsIf it does not, then click the Change button and select the Microsoft Excel entry.
If that fails try doing a Diagnostic:
Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from within Excel
1. Click the Microsoft Office button
2. Click on the Excel Options button to bring up the Excel Options dialog box
3. Click on the Resources button in the left hand pane
4. Click on the Diagnose button in the right hand pane
5. Click Continue
6. Click Run Diagnostics
