Solved Ofc 2010 programs not listed in available file types

May 10, 2012 at 12:47:36
Specs: Windows XP
I have the same problem, but Office 2010 programs are no longer listed in available file types. I can open directly from the 2010 programs, but not from Windows Explorer, shortcuts, etc.

Try going into Add/Remove Programs, click on the Office 2010 Suite, then click on Change. After the window loads, click Repair, then click Continue. This should restore the default file associations.

Right-click one of the Office files, click "Open with" then click the desired Office Program.

Thanks, but for some reason the Office 2010 programs are no longer listed in available file types under the "Open with" option. I have to open the desired Office 2010 program first and open the Office files from within the program. Thanks

Right-click one of the files, click "Open With" then click "Choose Program". If the Office application isn't listed in that box, click "Browse...", then go to the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office.

If you have Office 2003 go into this folder:
OFFICE11

If you have Office 2007 go into this folder:
OFFICE12

If you have Office 2010 go into this folder:
OFFICE14

In that folder you should be able to find the .EXE for the Office Program. For example, Word is WINWORD.EXE in that folder. Excel is EXCEL.EXE and PowerPoint is POWERPNT.EXE. After selecting the program, it'll appear in the list.

Thank you very much for the help. Unfortunately, this doesn't work either. I can browse to the various Office program files, but the "Open With" window reverts to the Office 2003 version (I still need to use Excel 2003 sometimes to run macros that will not run in Excel 2010). Thank you.

Do you mean in the list only Office 2003 is listed? If so, click the Browse... button and use my instructions from my previous post.

Yes, I do mean in the list only Office 2003 is listed. When I click the Browse button and use your instructions from your previous post, I am able to browse to and select the desired Office 2010 .EXE file. The problem I have is that when I select that file, the "Open With" window returns with the the Office 2003 program highlighted and no Office 2010 program is listed. The file then opens in Office 2003. This may have after an automatic program update; I was able to fix this problem temporarily by doing a System restore to an earlier date. The next day, however, the problem returned. Thank you.
