New messages in Outlook

Specs: Windows XP
When writing a new Outlook message, the font, bullet, bold, underline, etc options are suddenly inactive. In other words they show on the tool bar but are shaded and not useable. How do I correct this?

Your outgoing messages are set up to use "plain text" by default, so those formatting options in the toolbar are not available, just as they are also not available in NotePad because it's a plain-text editor.

To make those formatting options active you need to set up your outgoing messages to use "HTML" or "Rich Text" (preferrably HTML for greater versatility):

Thank you for your response. My outgoing messages are set up to use HTML. Any other ideas?

Sherry, are you clicking in the body of the message before you try and set those options?

Just a tip:

Keep in mind that regardless of what formatting you use when composing an email, you can't be sure that the recipient will see that same formatting unless they are using the same email application as you. Even then I don't know if it's 100% guaranteed.

Sending a fancy email, with all sorts of formatting, via Outlook to someone using Thunderbird or Yahoo or a smartphone app may result in the recipient getting an email that looks very different from what you've sent.

If you want to ensure that the recipient sees your content exactly as you want, consider creating a PDF and attaching that to the email.
