Need Excel Macro Help!!!

April 20, 2011 at 08:14:49
Specs: Windows Vista
OK, I have a simple spreadsheet - 2 tabs (1 with raw data, and 1 for reporting results from the data). For this problem I have 4 columns on the data tab I'm concerned with: Instance, Date of Instance, Time of Instance, and Instance Description. The Instances have about 50 different names. I need the macro to search for a specific instance (call it "Network Fail"), and when this instance is present on the data sheet; record the Date of Instance, Time of Instance, and Instance Description in the appriopate cells on the reporting results tab. I am fairly new at macros, but have a good understanding of excel - can anyone help me please??!!

Is there more than one occurrence of a given "instance" e.g. Network Fail that you need to pull data about?

If not, could you simply use VLOOKUP?

Thank you for the reply, yes - the "instances" column has about 2,000 entries in it, and it has mutiple occurances of the "Network Error". So, I'm thinking it will have to be a loop macro that will search through every entry in the instances column, and when it finds an instance titled "Network Error" - I need the Macro to take the date, time, and description (located in the same row as the "Network error" instance) and transfer that data to the reporting results tabs. Please let me know what you think.

Use advanced filter which allows you to filter with the results on a different sheet.

Grok Lobster - I think I lost you there lol. I thought you can only use the advanced filter to copy to the active sheet?? If you can explain how you would achieve the desired results through your method.....Thanks,

Advanced Filters can not push data to another sheet, but they can pull it.

In other words, if an Advanced Filter will fit your needs, then start the filter on the Results tab and point your List Range at the Data tab.

If that won't work for you, come on back and we'll take a shot at a macro for you.
