Need excel formula for % monthly gain/loss

August 31, 2011 at 05:41:34
Specs: Windows XP
I am trying to figure out my monthly percentage gain or loss on my investment. For example, I have the following daily percentages: .18, 0, -.09, .09, -.36, -.54, .45, .18, -.45, 0, 0, .27, 0 means the percentage did not change the next day. At the end of the month, do I use the following to get the monthly % gain/loss: AVERAGE(.18, 0, -.09, .09, -.36, -.54, .45, .18, -.45, 0, 0, .27, 0)/13. This does not look right. Please help!

wizard - fred,

I have that already but what I am trying to do is: Everyday I log how much each of the investments in my portfolio has either decreased or increased; thus the percentages I posted originally (above). My investment company provides this to me everyday. At the end of the month I would like to see how much % gain or decrease each of these investment made. Maybe I am just not explainig clearly what I am trying to accomplish.

You can't average the daily percentage gain to get the monthly gain because the base changes every day. You have to start from the beginning of the period to the end of the period.
