Mountain Lion refuses to play

Specs: Macintosh OSX 10.8.4
My iMac (OSX 10.8.4) won't open Word (or a dozen of my other programs) with the lordly remark that "Powerpoint" material is no longer recognized. Apart from cursing Apple's arrogance toward its "customers." is there a workaround, or do I just lose everything and play Solitaire?

I do not use a Mac, but I would first try a Repair or a Reinstall and see if that works.
There are not a lot of Office Mac users hereabout, so you might have more luck here:

won't open Word (or a dozen of my other programs)

Sounds more like a system problem then a strictly Office problem.
You might also try the Mac Forum:

You have a dozen apps that all give you a PowerPoint related error?

If that's true, then it sounds like you have a file association problem and your Mac thinks that all of the apps are PowerPoint files.

I'm not sure how you set file associations on a Mac, but I imagine it's something that you can find via Google.
