What version of Works are you using?

You can try and do a Repair, if that option is available.

Click on Start-> Control Panel
Click on Add/Remove Programs
Scroll down MS Works
Single Click on MS Works, and over on the right side you should be
offered the choice of Change or Remove
Select Change and you should be offered the choice to Repair.
Select Repair.

Also, have you installed any new programs or uninstalled anything lately?

You might what to run some type of anti-malware, like Malwarebits or SUPERAntiSpyware well as your anti-virus programs.

EDIT ADDED:

I have a disk for M/soft office xp pro

Why are you using Works when MS Office is a more robust suite of programs?

You likely have another shortcut to it in your Start Menu. Then you can right-click it then go to Send To > Desktop to create another shortcut back on your Desktop.

Try and recreate the shortcut:

Click on Start
Click on Programs

Scroll down to the MS Works Folder
if there is a folder,
click the folder to open it,
then on the MS Works Icon, right click,
and select Send To
and select Desktop (create shortcut)

See if that works.

The title of your post says MS Word icon is missing but in the text you say MS Works.

Which one is missing?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
